Pyrite is iron sulfide, FeS2, and marcasite is the same composition in a different crystal form. Marcasite was first described by Wilhelm Karl Ritter von Haidinger in 1845, and its name comes from an old Arabic word for pyrite. Pyrite is the mineral behind ordinary “fool’s gold.”
Texas is a large mineral- and rock-collecting region in south-central United States, known for its broad geologic diversity across the state’s many localities. It is especially notable to collectors for well-documented occurrences that include a wide range of mineral species and classic Texas material from scattered districts rather than a single famous mine. As a collecting locality, Texas remains relevant because its size and varied geology have produced many different specimen types, from common mineral occurrences to locality-specific finds valued by hobbyists and field collectors.
