Amethyst is a violet to purple variety of quartz, SiO2. Its name comes from Greek a-methystos, meaning “not drunk,” and ancient writers linked it to preventing drunkenness.
Piedra Parada in Tatatila Municipality, Veracruz, is a Mexican mineral locality best known for producing amethyst crystals that are often mislabelled as Las Vigas material. The locality and its nearby mines are also associated with baryte, gypsum, stellerite, chrysocolla, and garnet-group specimens, making it a productive source for a varied suite of collector minerals. For specimen collectors, it remains especially relevant for its classic Veracruz amethyst and its range of attractive secondary and hydrothermal minerals.
