Manganese oxide is a broad mineral group of manganese oxides and hydroxides, often dark and fine grained. The name was used for these materials as a generic term, and pyrolusite, MnO2, is the common oxide most often recognized.
The Middle Atlas in Morocco is the northernmost and second-highest of the country’s three main Atlas mountain chains, forming part of the broader Atlas Mountains of north-central Morocco. For collectors, it is especially notable as a prolific mineral and fossil region, with Mindat documenting numerous mineral occurrences and fossil localities across the range, including classic fluorite, native copper, haüyne, marcasite, and conglomerate specimens. The area’s mineralization has made it a well-known source for collectible specimens from localities around Midelt, Mibladen, Aouli, and nearby districts within the range.
