Aragonite is a calcium carbonate mineral, CaCO3, and a polymorph of calcite. It was first described in 1797 by Abraham Gottlob Werner, and its name comes from Aragón, Spain. It is chemically identical to calcite, but it has a different crystal structure.
Tazouta in Sefrou Province, Fès-Meknès Region, Morocco is an active diggings locality near Sefrou, best known among collectors for producing numerous groups of aragonite trillings. The site has also been referred to as Tagnaneit or Takaneit, and the aragonite is reported from an open outcrop rather than a mine. It remains a notable Moroccan locality for cabinet specimens of distinctive crystal groups that are widely recognized in mineral collections.
