Kyanite is a triclinic metamorphic silicate, Al2SiO5, prized for its blue blades. It was named in 1789 by Abraham Gottlob Werner from the Greek kyanos, meaning “blue,” and its blue color comes from iron.
Minas Gerais is a state in southeastern Brazil long recognized as one of the country’s great mineral provinces, with the name itself meaning “General Mines.” It is especially famous among collectors for the Iron Quadrangle, a major iron, gold, and gem-producing district, and for numerous pegmatite localities across the state that have yielded notable mineral specimens. The region’s geology spans several distinct mineral environments, including major iron-ore deposits and pegmatite districts such as the Safira and Araçuaí areas, making Minas Gerais one of Brazil’s most important and enduring sources of collectible minerals.
