Specularite is a silvery, metallic variety of hematite, with the formula Fe2O3. The name refers to its mirror-like appearance, and hematite was first described in 1856.
Champion Mine is an historic iron mine in Champion, Marquette County, Michigan, in the Marquette Iron Range district. It was one of the region’s productive iron operations, with mining that extended deeply underground and yielded large tonnages of ore before closing in 1912 after a major collapse. The locality is especially known to collectors for iron-formation minerals, including abundant specular hematite on the old dumps, along with quartz, tourmaline, ankerite, chamosite, and tremolite. It remains a well-known collecting locality in the region for classic Marquette County material.
