Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline variety of quartz composed of SiO2. Valued since prehistory, it provided early people with projectile points, knives, tools, cups, and bowls because it is abundant, durable, and beautiful. Its many varieties include agate, carnelian, jasper, onyx, and petrified wood.
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar District, formerly Aurangabad District, lies in Maharashtra’s Marathwada region and is notable for the basalt formations exposed around Ellora. The district is especially recognized for Ellora’s hand-carved basalt temples, highlighting the durability and workability of its volcanic bedrock. For collectors, the locality offers geological interest through its extensive basalt terrain and association with one of India’s most distinctive rock-cut heritage sites.
