Lapis lazuli is a deep-blue ornamental rock dominated by lazurite, with calcite and pyrite commonly present. It was recognized as a gem material for about 9,000 years and its name comes from Latin lapis and Arabic lazhward, meaning blue or azure. It has long been prized for jewelry and carving.
Ladjuar Medam, near Sar-e-Sang in the Kuran wa Munjan District of Badakhshan, Afghanistan, is part of the famed Sar-e-Sang lapis lazuli mining area. The locality is known for a skarn-hosted lapis lazuli deposit that has likely been worked since the 7th millennium BC, making it one of the classic sources of fine Afghan lapis for collectors. It has also produced associated minerals from the surrounding marble and schist environment, including richterite, lazurite, sodalite, and notable garnet specimens.
