Fluorite is a halide mineral of calcium fluoride, CaF2, and a major source of fluorine. It was named in 1797 by Carlo Antonio Galeani Napione from the Latin fluere, meaning “to flow,” for its use as a flux.
Cave-in-Rock in Hardin County, Illinois sits in the eastern part of the Illinois fluorspar field, a small district about 4 miles northwest of the village of Cave-in-Rock. It is geologically known for horizontal, bedded replacement deposits of fluorspar in Mississippian-age limestone, especially near the top of the Ste. Genevieve limestone. The district has produced important fluorite specimens from mines such as the Ozark-Mahoning, Minerva, Hill, Crystal, and other Cave-in-Rock workings, and it remains one of the classic American localities for fine Illinois fluorite.
