The teal-seafoam color of this Fluorite is not the ‘infinity stone’ green we usually see from this mine. From a historic find in 2023, this was the first time we’ve ever found green Fluorite on golden Pyrite. This piece does have minor damage.
Fluorite is a calcium fluoride mineral, CaF2, and the principal source of fluorine. It was first described in 1797 by Carlo Antonio Galeani Napione, and its name comes from the Latin fluere, meaning “to flow,” a nod to its use as a flux.
Atacocha Mine is a lead-zinc mine in the Atacocha mining district, about 13 to 15 kilometers northeast of Cerro de Pasco in Pasco province, central Peru. The district lies in a major Zn-Pb-Ag-Bi-Cu mining area, and sulfide minerals are especially common there. The mine has been an active source of ore from workings extending from about 4,300 meters down to around 3,600 meters, and specimens from the district are of interest to collectors for their lead-zinc sulfide associations.
