Locality: El Choique mine, Pehuenches Department, Neuquén Province, Argentina

Size: Thumbnail - 22 × 8.5 × 8 mm

Natural Pink Amethyst “twin” from the famous 2013 discovery in Argentina, which surprised collectors for its unique color. Unlike Rose Quartz, this gets its color from Iron and radiation, exactly like Amethsyt.

Pink amethyst is a variety of quartz, SiO2. Amethyst was described by Georgius Agricola in 1546, and its name comes from the Greek for “not intoxicated,” a nod to the old belief that it prevented drunkenness.

El Choique mine is an active locality in Pehuenches Department, Neuquén Province, Argentina, known for pink amethyst quartz geodes hosted in Late Cretaceous anhydrite rock. The mine was first discovered in 2013 and is on private property with no public access. Collector interest centers on its distinctive amethyst geodes and the associated mineral suite, which includes celestine, gypsum, and lithiophorite.
