Mined by John Cornish, literally the nicest human in the mining industry. Custer County in south-central Idaho is a historically important mining region noted for diverse ore deposits and multiple mineral districts, including the Bayhorse, White Knob, Mackay, and Yankee Fork areas. USGS studies describe the county’s geology as a mix of thick Paleozoic sedimentary rocks intruded by the Idaho batholith and overlain in places by Tertiary volcanic and sedimentary rocks, a setting that helped localize mineralization. Collector-relevant production has included silver, lead, zinc, copper, and other ore minerals from districts such as Bayhorse and Yankee Fork, with many classic Idaho specimens tied to these long-studied mining camps. The county remains significant to collectors today for its well-documented mining localities and enduring reputation for specimen-producing districts.
