Double sided, this specimen has multiple viewing angles. Hessonite is a gem variety of grossular garnet, with formula Ca3Al2(SiO4)3. Its name comes from the Greek hesson, meaning “inferior,” chosen because it is softer and denser than most garnet varieties; the original grossular was named in 1803 by Abraham Gottlob Werner after gooseberries.
Mana Mine is in Barang-Turghao, Bajaur District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan, in the northwestern foothills of the country. It is best known among collectors for gem garnet, especially grossular and its orange hessonite variety, which have been documented from the locality. Specimens from this mine are valued for attractive crystal form and color, making it a notable Pakistani source for garnet specimens today.
