Ferroaxinite is an iron-rich borosilicate mineral of the axinite group, with the formula Ca2Fe2+Al2BSi4O15OH. It was first named axinit in 1797 by René Just Haüy, from the Greek axina for “axe,” and later renamed ferroaxinite in 1909 for its iron dominance.

New Melones Dam in the West Belt of Calaveras County, California, lies within the broader Mother Lode region, a belt known for serpentine-hosted mineralization and significant structural shearing. The area is geologically notable for a lens-shaped chromium deposit in Late Jurassic serpentinite and for the nearby occurrence of ferroaxinite at New Melones Lake, which has drawn collector interest. The West Belt setting places it in one of the county’s classic ultramafic and serpentine tracts, where collectible material is tied to the complex geology along the Melones structural zone.
