Amethyst is a violet-to-purple variety of quartz, with formula SiO2. It was first described by Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon, and its name comes from the Greek for “not intoxicated.” Amethyst is a familiar gemstone prized for its rich purple color.
