Zircon is a zirconium orthosilicate, ZrSiO4, and one of the most important zirconium-bearing minerals. First described before 1959, its name was later renamed in 1783 by Abraham Gottlob Werner from Arabic, ultimately from Persian azargun, meaning “gold-colored.” It is the primary source of zirconium used in industry and heavy-mineral sands.Almost all gemstones are treated for stability and color.
