Two acicular sprays of bright white Aragonite measuring 20mm, very interesting piece! Aragonite is a calcium carbonate mineral, CaCO3, and the second most common natural polymorph of calcite. It was first described in 1797 by Abraham Gottlob Werner, who named it for Molina de Aragón, Spain. It is the mineral form found in many mollusk shells.
The Ophir Mining District in Tooele County, Utah lies in the southwestern Oquirrh Mountains, about 33 miles south-southwest of Salt Lake City, and it is a former gold-silver-zinc-lead-copper district now considered inactive. The district is known for base- and precious-metal deposits hosted in Lower Paleozoic carbonate rocks and for ore bodies that occur as bedded replacements, irregular replacements, and vein and fissure deposits. It produced about 2.8 million tons of ore, with notable recovery of lead, zinc, copper, silver, and gold, and the Ophir Hill area was one of its largest and most recent producers. For collectors, Ophir remains an important historic Utah mining district with a strong association to classic sulfide and oxidized ore assemblages.
