Fluorite is calcium fluoride, CaF2, and the principal source of fluorine. It was named in 1797 by Carlo Antonio Galeani Napione from the Latin fluere, meaning “to flow,” for its use as a flux; fluorite also helps provide fluoride used in toothpaste.
Greedy Hog Pocket is one of the named specimen pockets at Diana Maria Mine, within Rogerley Quarry near Stanhope in County Durham, England, part of the North Pennines fluorite district. The locality is best known for fluorite from mineralized veins in the quarry workings, with associated aragonite also recorded there. It remains relevant to collectors today because the Diana Maria Mine continues the Rogerley area’s long tradition of producing collectible pocket fluorite from a well-known specimen-mining operation.
