Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral, MnCO3, known for its pink to red color. It was named in 1813 by Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann from the Greek words for “rose” and “coloring,” a reference to its hue.

Capillitas mining district in the Andalgalá Department of Catamarca Province, Argentina is a Miocene epithermal district hosted in Paleozoic granite and related volcanic rocks, and it is best known for the famous banded layers, concretions, and stalactites of “Inca Rose” rhodochrosite. It has also produced a wide range of collector minerals and is regarded as the most species-rich mining district in Argentina. For specimen collectors, Capillitas remains especially important for world-class rhodochrosite and for notable material from veins such as Capillitas, La Rosario, Ortiz, Restauradora, and 25 de Mayo.
