Citrine is the yellow to orange variety of quartz, composed of silicon dioxide, SiO2, with a Mohs hardness of 7. Its name comes from the French citron, meaning lemon, reflecting its bright citrus coloration. Both natural citrine and heat-treated smoky quartz can display this distinctive color.
Like most Citrine gemstones, it’s common to assume it has been heated to obtain its color.
