Orthoceras is an extinct nautiloid cephalopod, not a mineral, preserved in marine limestone. First described by R. Brown in 1810, its name means “straight horn,” referring to its long, tapering shell. These fossils reveal ancient relatives of today’s chambered nautiluses.
The Atlas Mountains extend roughly 2,400 km across Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia, encompassing the High, Middle, and Anti-Atlas ranges along with the Saharan and Tell Atlas. Morocco’s Anti-Atlas is renowned for exceptionally diverse mineral resources, while the range’s complex history of rifting, folding, faulting, and mountain building created varied mineral-rich environments. Notable collecting localities include Morocco’s El Hammam fluorite mine and the meta-volcanic rocks of Toubkal, the highest peak in the Atlas and North Africa. This broad North African mountain system remains an important and highly diverse field region for mineral collectors.
