Hematite is iron oxide, Fe2O3, and this quartz variety shows its vivid red to black coloration. It was described by Abraham Gottlob Werner in 1789, and the name comes from the Greek word for “blood.”
Mbala is a town in Mbala District, Northern Province, Zambia, located at about 8°50'24" S, 31°21'57" E. It is best known as a populated place rather than a mining locality, so no significant mineral production or collector species are confirmed for the site. For specimen collectors, Mbala is primarily a geographic reference in northern Zambia rather than a documented source of notable mineral material.
