Tsavorite is a green variety of grossular garnet, a calcium aluminum silicate with formula Ca3Al2(SiO4)3. It was first described in 1967 by Dr. Campbell Bridges, and its name comes from Tsavo National Park in Kenya. Its vivid green color is the trait that makes it a prized gem.
Merelani Hills in the Lelatema Mountains of Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, Tanzania, are best known as the Merelani tanzanite mining area, a narrow belt about 2 km wide and 50 km long on the slopes southeast of Arusha. Tanzanite was reportedly first found there in 1968, and the deposit is subdivided into Blocks A, B, C, and D, with Block D worked by many small pits. For collectors, the locality is especially important for tanzanite and has also produced notable mineral associations including tremolite, tsavorite, prehnite, axinite-(Mn), kyanite, and merelaniite.
