Topaz is a hard orthorhombic aluminum silicate fluoride hydroxide, Al2(SiO4)(F,OH)2. It was named for Topazios Island in the Red Sea, and it has been known since before 1959. Its hardness makes it a durable gem, but perfect cleavage can make it chip easily.
Maynard’s Pit is a special area in the Maynard’s Mine most won’t have access to. Maynard’s Mine in Pismire Knolls lies in the Thomas Range of Juab County, western Utah, a district known for its rare-element volcanic geology and productive mineralized vents. The locality is especially associated with topaz and red beryl, with Maynard’s Claim identified as the original source for red beryl. For collectors, it remains one of the classic Thomas Range localities, prized for specimens tied to the area’s distinctive rhyolitic volcanic environment and its reputation for fine crystals.
