Aragonite is a carbonate mineral of CaCO3 and one of the two common natural forms of calcium carbonate. It was named in 1797 by Abraham Gottlob Werner for Molina de Aragón, Spain. It is the calcium carbonate found in mollusk shells.
The Anti-Atlas Mountains in southern Morocco form one of the country’s main mountain ranges and are a major mineral province with a long history of mining and specimen production. The region is geologically notable for Carboniferous-age mineralization and for localities such as the Bou Azzer and Aghbar mines, which have produced classic collector material. It is especially known for diverse mineral occurrences across many sites, making it an important source area for mineral specimens today.
