Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral, FeS2, prized for its bright metallic luster and common “fool’s gold” look. It was named in 1832 by Ernst Friedrich Glocker from the Greek word for fire, and a rainbow iridescent sheen can form from a very thin surface coating.

Ulyanovsk Oblast in central Russia sits on the Volga River in the Volga-Ural petroleum province, a major sedimentary basin known for oil and gas resources. For collectors, the region is notable chiefly for its petroleum geology rather than classic mineral species, with the broader province documented as a significant source of hydrocarbon production and reserves. Mineral-specimen localities from the oblast are comparatively sparse in the approved sources, so its current relevance is mainly as a geologic region within a productive oil-bearing province.
