Alexandrite is a chromium-bearing variety of chrysoberyl, with formula BeAl2O4. It was named in 1842 by Nils Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld for Alexander II of Russia. It is prized for its color change from green in daylight to red in incandescent light.
Carnaíba mining district in Pindobaçu, Bahia, Brazil is a world-famous emerald district in the mica schists of the municipality of Pindobaçu, about 30 kilometres south of Campo Formoso. Discovered in the 1960s, it is regarded as one of the most important emerald deposits found in Brazil and is associated with exceptionally large emerald specimens, including a 86,136-carat cut stone found there in 1974. Collectors value Carnaíba for its historic production of fine emeralds and its enduring status as a classic Brazilian source locality, even though mining there has faced difficulties and production has declined.
