Fluorite is calcium fluoride, CaF2, and the chief source of fluorine. It was named in 1797 by Carlo Antonio Galeani Napione from the Latin fluere, meaning “to flow,” a nod to its use as a flux.

El Hammam Mine lies about 43 km southwest of Meknès in Morocco and is the only fluorite mine in the country. The deposit is known for several veins, including the El Hammam vein, Bergamou vein, and Gouaida vein, with pale green fluorite from the main vein and purple fluorite from the other two. It is also noted for fluorite and carbonate mineralization with unusually high rare earth element content, and specimens from the mine include fluorite, calcite, pyrite, quartz, sphalerite, and pyrrhotite. For collectors, El Hammam remains an important Moroccan locality because it is the nation’s classic source for fluorite and continues to produce distinctive, aesthetic material.
