Quartz is crystalline silicon dioxide, SiO2, and a Japan Law twin is a distinctive contact twin with inclined crystal axes. First described by Weiss in 1829 from La Gardette, France, it gained its name after abundant examples were found in Japan. Japan Law twins are the only common quartz twins with inclined c axes.
Ambatondrazaka District in Madagascar’s Alaotra-Mangoro Region is a renowned collecting area surrounding Lake Alaotra, where LCT pegmatites produce beryl-columbite and chrysoberyl-type mineralization. The district is especially noted for chrysoberyl from localities such as Madiotsifafana, along with amethyst and blue sapphire recovered from nearby workings. Minerals from the surrounding pegmatite fields have long reached market through Ambatondrazaka, making the locality name familiar on specimens offered to collectors today.
