Colemanite is a hydrated calcium borate, CaB3O4(OH)3·H2O, and a monoclinic mineral in the borate group. It was first described in 1883 and named for William Tell Coleman, owner of the mine where it was first found. Colemanite has been an important ore of boron used in making borax.
Veatchite is a hydrated strontium borate mineral, Sr2B11O16(OH)5 · H2O. It was first described in 1960 by J. R. Clark and M. E. Mrose, and named for geologist John Veatch.
Billie Mine is a borate mine in the Furnace Creek District of Death Valley National Park, in the Black Mountains of Inyo County, California. It is geologically known for borate deposits hosted in the Furnace Creek Formation and for producing primary borate minerals including colemanite, ulexite, and probertite. The mine has also yielded collector-notable combinations such as clear colemanite crystals with celestine, and it remains a classic Death Valley locality for borate specimens today.
