Fluorite is calcium fluoride, CaF2, and the principal source of fluorine. It was named in 1797 by Carlo Antonio Galeani Napione from the Latin fluere, meaning “to flow,” for its use as a flux.
Lady Annabella Mine, in the former Eastgate Quarry at Eastgate near Stanhope in County Durham, sits in the Weardale district of northern England and is a collector-focused fluorite locality. It is stratigraphically hosted in the upper part of the Great Limestone Formation of Carboniferous age, where the quarry is cut by the Fairy Hole Vein and related faults that helped create mineralized openings. The locality is known for fluorite, with galena also recorded, and specimens have included pockets such as Fairy Holes Pocket and Purple Rain Pocket. For collectors, it remains relevant as a modern Weardale source for colorful fluorite and associated mineral specimens.
