Quartz var. grape agate is a purple, botryoidal variety of quartz, with the formula SiO2. The material was first described by collectors after Indonesian finds, and the name “grape agate” comes from its grape-like appearance, not from actual agate.
The “Grape Agate” mines in Mamuju Regency, West Sulawesi Province, Indonesia are a noted source of the marketable grape agate material collected from the Mamuju area, where the term is used for botryoidal quartz and chalcedony specimens. The locality is known in collector circles for its distinctive rounded, grape-like formations in pink to pale purple tones, which have made it one of the better-known Indonesian sources for this material. Specimens from this area are especially valued today for their attractive crystal habit, vivid color, and strong display appeal.
