This piece looks great backlit, and the surface is unpolished. Dendritic chalcedony is a variety of quartz, with the formula SiO2, made of microscopic fibrous crystals and marked by tree-like manganese and iron inclusions. Chalcedony was described in scientific literature as a distinct mineral term for these fibrous quartz aggregates, and the name comes from Chalcedon, an ancient place name. Such dendritic markings create the familiar moss-agate look prized in decorative stone.
