Celestine is a strontium sulfate mineral, SrSO4, and the most common strontium mineral. It was renamed in 1798 by Abraham Gottlieb Werner from the Greek cœlestis, meaning celestial, for the pale blue color of the original specimen.

The Sakoany deposit in Katsepy Commune, Mitsinjo District, Boeny, Madagascar is a well-known celestine locality near the village of Sakoany on the western side of the Betsiboka River where it opens into Bombetoka Bay. It is especially recognized for producing sharp, well-formed celestine crystals, commonly blue to pale blue and sometimes colorless, that can reach impressive specimen size. For collectors, Sakoany remains an important Madagascar source for attractive celestine pieces with strong crystal form and vivid color.
