This pre-1972 mineral specimen combines chalcopyrite, CuFeS2, and sphalerite, ZnS, with quartz, SiO2. Chalcopyrite and sphalerite are important metallic sulfide minerals, while quartz is a silicon dioxide mineral commonly associated with ore veins.
The Tri-State Mining District spans southeastern Kansas, southwestern Missouri, and northeastern Oklahoma, forming a classic low-temperature Mississippi Valley-type ore district. Geologically, it is best known for lead-zinc deposits hosted in the Ozark Plateau, with galena and sphalerite as the principal primary ore minerals and minor copper minerals also present. Historic mines, particularly around Picher, produced abundant lead- and zinc-bearing specimens, making the district an important and widely recognized locality for collectors of classic sulfide minerals.
