Quartz is a silicate mineral of silicon dioxide, SiO2, and one of the most common minerals in Earth’s crust. The name quartz was first used by Georgius Agricola in 1530, and it likely comes from the German word “quarz,” with uncertain earlier origins. It is prized in electronics because quartz crystals can generate an electrical charge under pressure.

The Goboboseb Mountains are in the Brandberg Area of Dâures Constituency, Erongo Region, Namibia, about 35 km west of the Brandberg massif. Geologically, they belong to the Awahab Formation of the Etendeka Group, made up of interbedded basalts and quartz latites, and the area is especially known for its 132 to 135 million-year-old volcanic rocks. For collectors, the locality is famous for amethyst and quartz crystals, including attractive sceptre forms, with specimens often labeled as “Brandberg” quartz.
