Hemimorphite is a zinc silicate mineral, Zn4Si2O7(OH)2·H2O, and a secondary mineral in weathered zinc deposits. It was named in 1853 by Adolph Kenngott for its hemimorphic crystal form, and it was long known as calamine.

The Ojuela Mine lies near Mapimí in Durango, Mexico, at the base of the northeast escarpment of the Sierra de Mapimí, and it has been known since 1660. This historic mining district is especially celebrated for world-class collector minerals, including adamite, wulfenite, smithsonite, and mimetite, along with associated species such as hemimorphite, calcite, and arsenopyrite. Specimens from Ojuela remain highly sought after today because the mine has produced classic, vividly crystallized material that is strongly associated with the locality’s long mineral collecting reputation.
