This Red Plume Carnelian Agate is framed with a drastic white Agate banding, red plumes around the edge, and an isolated pool of Carnelian in the center.
Agate is a patterned variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz with red coloration. Carnelian means reddish chalcedony, while agate describes chalcedony displaying curved or concentric banding. Its red color commonly reflects iron compounds within the stone.
Kerrouchene, located about 2 km northwest of Kerrouchen in Morocco’s Khénifra Province, is a notable agate locality developed within Triassic and Lower Jurassic basaltic volcanic rocks. Agates occur across mountain slopes, agricultural fields, and roadside exposures, making the area a distinctive source for Moroccan agate specimens. The locality has also produced azurite and malachite, including well-formed, blocky azurite crystals reaching nearly 3 cm in length. Its combination of colorful agate and collectible copper minerals gives Kerrouchene enduring appeal to mineral collectors.
