Fluorite is calcium fluoride, CaF2, and a halide mineral known commercially as fluorspar. It was named in 1797 by Carlo Antonio Galeani Napione from the Latin fluere, meaning “to flow,” because it was used as a flux. It is the principal source of fluorine and the material that gives toothpaste its fluoride.
Quanzhou in Fujian Province, China is a mineral locality region that includes several collector-relevant districts, including Dehua and Yongchun counties. Mindat records occurrences here for species such as goethite, chalcedony, fluorite, quartz, and calcite, and also notes nearby gold and base-metal deposit areas within the greater Quanzhou region. The area is especially relevant to collectors for its documented mineral localities and the variety of specimen material associated with its deposits.
