Covellite is a copper sulfide, CuS, first described in 1832 by François Sulpice Beudant. Its name comes from the Italian mineralogist Niccolò Covelli, and the mineral is prized for its deep indigo-blue, iridescent surfaces.
Reynolds Mine is part of the Summitville mining district in Rio Grande County, in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, where the Summitville Mine became known for both historic underground workings and later large-scale gold production. The Reynolds adit was driven to drain the underground workings and serve as an ore haulage tunnel, and it later became a significant source of acid- and metal-rich drainage at the site. Summitville is known to collectors and mining historians for gold and associated silver, copper, lead, and other metal-bearing ore from a district that also includes notable adits and tunnels. Today, the locality is still relevant because it remains one of Colorado’s best-known mining and remediation sites, with the Reynolds Tunnel name appearing in mineral locality records for Summitville Mine.
