Big Bend National Park in southern Brewster County, Texas, lies along the Rio Grande on the U.S.-Mexico border and includes the rugged Chisos Mountains, where the park’s classic mountain-and-basin scenery is centered. Geologically, it is known for Tertiary volcanic rocks exposed in the park, including the Canoe, Chisos, and South Rim formations, along with conglomerate, sandstone, limestone, tuff, flow breccia, and lava. For collectors, the park is especially associated with mineral occurrences in the Chisos Mountains and with the historic Mariscal Mine, a former mercury producer within the park. Its combination of volcanic geology and multiple named mineral localities continues to make Big Bend an important Texas destination for mineral enthusiasts.
