Goethite is a hydrated iron oxide hydroxide, FeO(OH), and a common weathering product of iron-bearing minerals. It was named in 1806 by Johann Georg Lenz for Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and its name comes from Goethe’s surname. It is the iron oxide behind many yellow-brown limonite ores.
