Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral with the formula FeS2. Named in antiquity from the Greek pyr, meaning fire, because it sparked when struck. Its brassy color also gave rise to its nickname of “fool’s gold.”
Huanzala Mine, in the Huallanca District of Bolognesi Province, Ancash, Peru, is a lead-zinc mine. It is especially renowned among collectors for producing excellent pyrite and fluorite specimens. The mine is widely regarded as one of the most prolific specimen localities in the world, with a remarkable output of mineral specimens from a single mine.
