Staurolite is a dark brown iron-aluminum silicate mineral with the formula Fe2+2Al9Si4O23(OH) found in metamorphic rocks like mica schist. Its name comes from the Greek word "stavros," meaning cross, because it often forms distinctive cruciform twin crystals that look like a cross. Collectors in Virginia sometimes call these cross-shaped specimens "fairy stones" due to their magical appearance.
