Locality: Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan

Size: Miniature - 5.4 × 4.3 × 3.6 cm

This is from an unreleased lot we purchased from a miner recently. Bright, milky-yellow Apatite, sitting on Chlinoclore, Manganese Calcite (fluorescent), and Titanite Sphene.

Apatite is a group of calcium phosphate minerals, most often fluorapatite, with the formula Ca5(PO4)3(Cl,F,OH). Abraham Gottlob Werner first introduced the name in 1786, from Greek for “to deceive,” because it was often confused with other minerals; fluorapatite also supplies phosphate used in fertilizers.

Skardu, in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, is a locality name used for material from the old Skardu District, with many specimens now understood to come from the present-day Shigar or Rondu districts. The broader Skardu-Shigar region is known for complex granitic pegmatites and alpine-type deposits along the Main Karakoram Thrust, a setting that has produced collector minerals such as tourmaline, quartz, triplite, spessartine, garnet, heliodor, and calcite. For collectors, it remains an important source area for fine pegmatite minerals from one of Pakistan’s classic high-mountain mineral districts.
