Calcite is a calcium carbonate mineral, CaCO3, and one of the most familiar carbonate species. It was first described in 1841 by Wilhelm Karl von Haidinger; the name comes from the Greek word for lime. A common example is Iceland spar, valued for its clear, double-refracting crystals.
