Aragonite is a carbonate mineral with the formula CaCO3. It was first described in 1797 by Abraham Gottlob Werner, and its name comes from Molina de Aragón, Spain. It is the form of calcium carbonate found in mollusk shells.
The Anti-Atlas Mountains in southern Morocco are one of the country’s four main mountain ranges and a major mineral province with many documented occurrences. The range is geologically notable for Carboniferous mineralization and for hosting some of Morocco’s best-known mining centers, including Bou Azzer and Aghbar. Collectors value the area for its wide variety of mineral species and for the significant specimens that have come from its mines and districts, especially within the eastern and central Anti-Atlas. Its long mining record and still-active mineral potential make it one of Morocco’s most important collecting regions.
