This spectrum of colorful Tanzanites range from 2.4-4mm. Tanzanite is a blue to blue-violet gem variety of zoisite, with color from trace vanadium. It was first reported from the Merelani Hills in Tanzania, and its name comes from Tanzania. Across the market, it is prized as a striking birthstone-style gem with vivid color.
Merelani Hills, on the slopes of the Lelatema Mountains in Simanjiro District, Manyara Region, Tanzania, is the famed Merelani tanzanite mining area about 70 km southeast of Arusha. It is a narrow, elongated gem district subdivided into four main blocks, and it is the world’s only source of tanzanite, which was first reported there in 1968. The locality is also known for fine tremolite and other collector minerals associated with the tanzanite workings, making it one of Tanzania’s most important gemstone sources for specimens today.
