Selenite is the transparent variety of gypsum, a calcium sulfate mineral with the formula CaSO4·2H2O. Its name comes from the Greek word for "moon," reflecting its moon-like white reflections or the quality of light transmitted through translucent slabs. Unlike the element selenium, this mineral contains no selenium despite the similar name.
