This piece was grown by placing a quartz crystal on a vat of hot, melted Bismuth. As the Busmuth cools, crystals form. As those crystals hit oxygen and cool, rainbows of colors form on the surface.
Bismuth is a brittle metallic element, Bi, often found as native bismuth or in bismuthinite. Claude Geoffroy officially described it in 1753, and its name comes from the German words meaning “white mass.” It is used in stomach medicines and other everyday pharmaceutical products.
